Scaling for the Big Screen: How Toronto International Film Festival  Leverages 45Drives Storinators to Deliver Thousands of Flawless Screenings

TIFF - Toronto International Film Festival Media & Entertainment

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) operates at an incredible scale, delivering thousands of screenings to global audiences. Discover how 45Drives Storinators provide the high-capacity, reliable storage needed to keep every film playing flawlessly.

Customer Overview

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is a global leader in film culture. Operating out of the TIFF Lightbox, a world-class "palace of film exhibition" in downtown Toronto, the organization manages year-round screenings across six screens. During the annual festival, the scale expands to nearly 30 screens, including massive 2,500-seat gala theaters and large-scale multiplexes.

James King, TIFF’s Senior Technical Manager, is responsible for the technical deployment and builds that power the festival. With over 20 years of experience, James has evolved the festival's tech from 35mm film to a sophisticated, IT-driven digital infrastructure.

The Challenge: The 450-Film Logistics Headache

During TIFF’s 11-day festival window, the technical team faces a scaling challenge that James describes as a "different animal."

·      Enormous Scale: With 450+ films and thousands of individual screenings, the sheer volume of data is staggering.

·      The Content Bottleneck: High-resolution Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) average 120GB to 280GB.”When you scale it up to that size, storage management and deployment become a pretty big logistical challenge.”

·      Zero Downtime Stakes: In cinema, there is no "buffering." If a file is corrupt or a drive fails, the screening is ruined.“You just can't account for any downtime. The show must go on.”

·      Validation Complexity: DCPs require strict hash verification. A single missing kilobyte of data means a total failure to ingest or play.

·      Limited Flexibility:“Our previous storage array was fairly locked off—it prevented me from really customizing it and using it to best match our needs.”

Beyond scale, TIFF needed a solution that could support a Linux-based content management system, deliver 24–50TB of storage, and provide fast 10Gb network performance with reliable RAID protection.

“I was looking for a reliable appliance that could store around 24–50TB of films, support 10Gb  networking, and be a reliable RAID set overall.”

The Solution: 45Drives Storinator Mi4 for High-Density Reliability

To eliminate the "enormous bottleneck" of manual drive delivery, TIFF transitioned to a centralized, network-driven architecture powered by four 45Drives Storinator Mi4 units. These servers act as the high-capacity backbone of their Library Management System (LMS), which stores, manages, and distributes digital cinema content before it is played in theaters.

“We have four Mi4’s deployed one year-round for our main building, and then three more for our large gala venues during the festival.”

·      Centralized High-Performance Repositories: TIFF utilizes its Mi4 systems to ingest massive quantities of content and deploy it directly to local playout servers over the network.

“We can ensure all films ingested to the server can be pulled quickly to the playout server, so we have no downtime if anything comes up.”

·      Compact, Portable Deployment: The Mi4’s small rack footprint allows TIFF to quickly deploy systems into temporary festival venues.

“Essentially, I need a fast and reliable way to roll in a small portable rack with enterprise-grade storage for our gala venues.”

·      Fail-Safe Redundancy: By placing these 45Drives units at key venues, the team has immediate redundancy. This allows them to "punt" content back up instantly if a file is accidentally deleted or corrupted on a local server.

“The Mi4 was perfect… we needed something failproof over those 2–3 weeks during our busiest time.”

·      Flexible, Linux-Based Environment: TIFF can run its preferred software stack without vendor restrictions.

·      Scalable Performance: “The scalability ensures we can increase capacity down the road, or move to faster network I/O when the opportunity opens up.”

“The whole necessity of having that redundant library server becomes that much more critical... you want to make sure that you have a fallback in case something happens.” — James King

Results & Benefits

By integrating 45Drives Storinator Mi4 servers into their workflow, TIFF has achieved:

·      Streamlined Content Management: Dedicated teams now manage the flow of hundreds of films from a central point.

“It’s generally smoothed out our distribution workflows, especially when managing hundreds of films remotely with very little room for downtime.”

·      Massive Capacity: With four Mi4 units, TIFF can handle the 30+ terabytes of active content required during the festival.

·      Reliable High-Stakes Screenings: Even for high-stakes world premieres, the technical team operates with the confidence that their 45Drives systems provide a secure, redundant safety net.

“Reliability has been fantastic,I haven’t seen any downtime since we’ve utilized the storage servers.”

·      High-Speed Network Performance: “The ability to scale up with a 10Gb network interface has really improved how fast we can download, manage, and distribute films across our network.”

·      Eliminating "Sneakernet": Moving to a network-based model has reduced physical drive handling and human error.

Support Experience

The complexity of TIFF’s infrastructure requires a deep integration between exhibition technology and IT. The reliability of the Storinator Mi4 hardware allows James's team to focus on the art of exhibition rather than worrying about the underlying storage stability.

“We had one small issue a couple months before deployment, and the support team was extremely quick and responsive. They stayed on top of it until everything was resolved well in time for our installation.”

Managing one of the world's largest film festivals requires a storage infrastructure that never blinks. With multiple 45Drives Storinator Mi4 units at the core of their network, TIFF ensures that the "show goes on" for thousands of moviegoers every year.

“At the end of the day, we just need something that works something we can trust completely during the busiest weeks of the year.”
