Drive error

Postby Peregrinus » Fri Oct 14, 2016 5:29 pm

So I'm new to the 45 drive and have a question on a drive error.
This is what I get in my /var/log/messages
Oct 14 14:55:28 smartd[1166]: Device: /dev/sde [SAT], 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

I keep getting this message but when checked with the smartd no errors show up?
Anyone have any ideas or commands to run to see if i'm losing a drive or not?

Running centos7
Thanks
Brian

Hey Brian,

That drive definitely has one bad sector as it is showing up in the dmesg. You can also run smart tests to see other parameters, In your case for that particular drive:

smartctl -t (short or long) /dev/sde - This will do a self test on the drive (the long test takes awhile)

To view the results you can do:

smartctl -a /dev/sde - Here you should see a "1" under the Current pending sector count parameter.

Thanks,
Rob

So should this drive be replaced or should I wait for more errors?
Here is the output. Thanks for your insite.

I would replace the disk sooner than later as that is a critical parameter. The official documentation for smartd states: "This is a critical parameter. Degradation of this parameter may indicate imminent drive failure. Urgent data backup and hardware replacement is recommended."
The good news is Western Digital will send you a replacement as those drives have a 5 year warranty!

Getting ready to replace the drive but have not found a good way to tell which one it is.. Not sure how to collateral which one it is. I'm running freenas now. Here is the message.

Device: /dev/hptnr [hpt_disk_1/3/1], 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
In freenas it says da2 is the drive that has a current pending sector.

Is there an easy way to link the drive info to the bay the drive is in?
Running a storanator 45.
Thanks

Hey,

Use this guide to help you identify the drives:

http://www.45drives.com/wiki/index.php? ... a_ZFS_Pool

If you don't have the web GUI installed you can download it form here:

Thanks for the info. Got it installed. But I am having a hard time getting some downtime to reboot. Is there another way to tell which drive it is?
